asked the Minister for Health if a CAT scanner was purchased at a cost of £½ million, by the Western Board and if it is being held in storage because of lack of funds to operate it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Approval for the purchase of a CAT scanner for Galway Regional Hospital at a cost of £463,000 was given last year. Funds were allocated by my Department to enable the CAT scanner to be purchased and for the adaptation works to be undertaken to provide accommodation at the hospital for this equipment.
The necessary adaptation works have not been carried out by the Western Health Board and in the meantime the CAT scanner is being held in storage. I understand that it is intended to commence the adaptation works soon and to have the CAT scanner installed early in 1983.
