Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Boat Building Industry.

378.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the proposals there are to assist the boat building industry.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to firms engaged in the manufacture of all types of boats from small pleasure craft to larger vessels such as fishing trawlers, etc. Firms engaged in the manufacture of all such craft can avail of the grant assistance and other facilities available to industry generally, from the Industrial Development Authority and other State agencies.

I am aware that the level of orders being received by the boat building industry, particularly those for sea-going trawlers, is such that companies generally are experiencing difficulties and the possibility of securing business from external sources is being pursued through the IDA and other agencies.

The Deputy may be assured that the situation will be kept under review in order to ensure that individual firms are assisted in every possible and appropriate way to secure orders which will ensure their continued viability.
