397.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give the follosing information in respect of each local authority: (1) the total amount collected in driving licence fees in 1980 and 1981 and the estimated amount in 1982; (2) the amount collected in motor taxation for the same period; (3) the amount spent on the up-keep of courthouses; (4) the cost of collecting driving licence fees and motor taxation both by his Department and the local authority; and (5) the amount allocated to each local authority in 1981-82 in respect of overheads.

As the reply contains a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have in circulated with the Official Report.

The information available relates to the amounts of motor licence duty, including driving licence fees, collected in 1980 and 1981 and the estimated amounts which it is expected will be collected in respect of 1982. The various expenses properly incurred by licencing authorities, which include costs of staffing, accommodation and various overheads, are recouped in full on foot of claims furnished and the information available relates to the actual overall amounts paid to each licensing authority during the years 1980 and 1981 together with the overall voted provision for these purposes in respect of 1982. In addition, details are supplied relating to the relevant estimated cost in so far as the Department is concerned.

Following is the Statement:
