Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Computer Links.

342.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals his Department have to install computer links at the major points of entry into the country in order that the present confusion and delay arising from the payment of value-added tax at the point of entry will be eliminated; and if he will give assurances that the current unreasonable delays will be eliminated rapidly.

There are no specific proposals under consideration at present for installing computer links for customs clearance purposes at points of entry into the country. The operation of the scheme for payment of value-added tax at the point of importation is being monitored closely by the Revenue Commissioners to ensure that any undue delays in the clearance of goods by customs are eliminated. While there were initial problems when the new system was introduced, the situation has now improved considerably and is expected to improve further in coming weeks.
