Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - A.I.Service.

271.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will consider an application for a licence to operate an artificial insemination service from one farmer in County Galway.

The practice of artificial insemination for livestock is controlled in this country by the Lifestock (Artificial Insemination) Act, 1947, and the Live-stock (Artificial Insemination) Regulations, 1948.

Nine specialist organisations are licensed and these provide a comprehensive AI service for the entire country. I am not satisfied that it would be in the best interests of the livestock industry that further licences be issued at this time.
