Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Drift-net Salmon Licences.

215.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the number of drift-net salmon licences issued for the 1982 season; the number of salmon estimated to have been caught (a) legally and (b) illegally; and the number of prosecutions which have been brought for illegal salmon fishing.

While official statistics for 1982 have not yet been finalised, the following provisional figures have been furnished by the regional fisheries boards.

A total of 828 salmon drift-net licences was issued. The catch of salmon compiled from salmon dealers registers and other sources is estimated at 280,000 fish. It is not possible to say the proportion of the catch which was caught illegally. A total of 407 prosecutions were taken or are awaiting court hearing. As well, 800 nets were seized.
