5.

Mr. Coughlan

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 3, 4, and 5 together.

A traffic warden service under the Local Authorities (Traffic Wardens) Act, 1975, is now operated by 19 local authorities and the reply is based on information supplied by these authorities. A traffic warden service under Garda control operates in Dublin and in certain other towns and details of this would be appropriate to the Minister for Justice.

Under the 1975 Act, 33 traffic wardens were being employed as at 24 January, 1983; the aggregate cost of employing such wardens in 1982 was approximately £190,000 and the total of fines on-the-spot paid to local authorities last year as a result of their warden activities was approximately £260,000.
