Vol. 339 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Heavily Laden Vehicle Regulations.

2.

asked the Minister for the Environment whether he has satisfied himself, in view of recent road accidents and near-accidents, that the regulations governing heavily laden vehicles are adequate from the point of view of public safety and that the existing regulations are being applied and observed; and the action he proposes in the matter.

There is no particular information available in regard to road accidents and near-accidents in which heavily laden vehicles were involved.

The Road Traffic Acts 1961 to 1968, and regulations made thereunder, prescribe maximum permissible weights within which vehicles may operate. They also require that the vehicle should be roadworthy and safely loaded.

I am satisfied that the provisions of these regulations are adequate from a public safety standpoint. The enforcement of the regulations is a matter for the Garda authorities.
