Vol. 340 No. 2

Written Answers. - Galway Garda Station.

286.

asked the Minister for Justice when a Garda station will be provided on the eastern side of Galway city in line with the recommendation of the local Garda superiors.

, Limerick East): In a reply of 17 December 1981 to a question of a similar nature from the Deputy it was explained that a team of officers of the Garda Síochána and the Department of the Public Service were engaged in an examination of how Garda manpower resources throughout the country could best be organised so as to provide the most effective police service possible. It was stated that it was hoped that an examination of the policing arrangements in Galway would be carried out early in 1982. Unfortunately this did not prove possible as the team found it necessary to concentrate on other tasks, including an examination of deployment of personnel in Dublin and the implementation and monitoring of pilot schemes designed to improve policing in rural areas. The examination of the policing requirements of Galway are now planned to commence in April next and the question of providing a Garda station on the eastern side of Galway city will be considered in the light of the findings of this examination.
