The measures related to the provision made in the Estimates for the Public Service 1983 in respect of the Education group of Votes were not formulated with reference to geographical areas. It would, accordingly, be misleading to attempt to assess their impact on the basis of their relevance to individual areas of the country.
Furthermore, I would draw the attention of the Deputy to the statement of my predecessor on 18 November 1982 in which he drew attention to the fact that the total provision made for 1983 represented an increase of 13.7 per cent on the original provision for 1982. It was also approximately £70 million in excess of the expected outturn for 1982.
