I am informed by the Garda authorities that 2,303 persons were arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939, during the year ended 31 December 1981, 1,255 of whom were arrested in the Dublin area. The corresponding figures for the year ended 31 December 1982 were 2,308 and 1,207.
In 1981, 323 persons were charged within 48 hours of being arrested, 235 in the Dublin area. The corresponding figures for the year ended 31 December 1982 were 256 and 188.
