Vol. 341 No. 6

Written Answers . - Divorce Recognition .

1064.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his Department will recognise divorces which have been obtained in another jurisdiction; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: The general position is that for the purposes of determining entitlements under the various Social Welfare schemes my Department do recognise divorces granted by foreign courts of persons domiciled within their jurisdictions. It would not be possible to generalise on the effects in relation to benefits as a whole as they could vary as circumstances of individual claimants differed.

If, therefore, the Deputy is aware of any particular case in which difficulty is being experienced, I will be glad to have the position clarified for him if particulars of the case are submitted.
