Vol. 341 No. 6

Written Answers . - Social Welfare Benefits .

1065.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when unemployment benefit will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

: The claim to unemployment benefit of the person concerned has been authorised at the weekly rate of £31.65. All arrears of flat-rate benefit due to him were paid on 6 April 1983. His pay-related benefit entitlement has also been determined and all arrears due to him were paid on 15 April 1983.

Further combined weekly payments of £37.68, including £6.03 pay-related benefit, will continue to be made as they become due.

1066.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will give in tabular form the following information in respect of his Department so that it can be established that the cut-backs in civil service staffing have been effectively and fairly spread as between the different grades and the various categories of personnel; (a) the number of approved posts on 13 July, 1981; (b) the number of posts filled on 18 February, 1983; and (c) the percentage of approved posts vacant on 1 February, 1983 in each of the following grades: secretary, deputy secretary, assistant secretary, principal officer, assistant principal officer, higher executive officer; and executive officer; and if he will give similar information in respect of professional and technical officers at principal officer to executive officer level inclusive (either directly linked or closely related to the general administrative grades referred to).

: The information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

(a) Number of approved posts on 13 July 1981, 3,319.

(b) Number of posts filled on 18 February 1983, 3, 327.

Notes:

(1) There is no Deputy Secretary post in the Department.

(2) New posts were sanctioned after 21 July 1981 because of an increase in the Department's workload, particularly in relation to unemployment benefit claims. The increase in the total number of posts is partially offset by unfilled vacancies. The nett result is that the number at (b) above shows a slight increase on the number at (a).

(3) New posts in the Department's Inspection Branch were sanctioned because of an increase in the workload. Recruitment of Social Welfare Officers is proceeding and new Social Welfare Supervisors will be appointed when the new Social Welfare Officers are recruited.
