(c) Number of Telephonists and Night Telephonists presently under notice of dismissal or required to resign in 1983: Telephonists — 4; Night Telephonists — 3.

(d) The total numbers of day telephone and night telephone operating staff required at the commencement of the current year were 3,300 and 1,970 respectively; the requirements for later years are dependent on the effect of a number of factors such as extension of automatic working, improvement in the telephone network and introduction of new services, and it would not be possible to forecast these accurately at this stage.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the exchange at Araglin, Kilworth, County Cork, will be converted to the direct dialling system, code 058; the reasons for the delay as a commitment was given that the area would be automatic 12 months ago; and if he will consider transferring the Araglin area to the Fermoy exchange, code 025 as it would be more relevant.

: It is expected that Araglin exchange will be converted to automatic working in 1984. The equipment at Araglin will work through a new digital trunk switching exchange to be provided at Dungarvan. This is the most economical and practical means of providing automatic service for the area. Under automatic conditions, Araglin subscribers will have the facility of direct dialling to the Fermoy (025) area at the local call charge rate.

Earlier forecasts for introduction of automatic service at Araglin have proven unattainable because of the magnitude of the overall telecommunications development programme.

689.

It is not planned to provide telephone kiosks at Pinewood, Park Road Estate, Ardshanavooley, Woodlawn Park or Countess Grove Estate which are all served by existing telephone kiosks within a few hundred yards of each estate.
