Vol. 341 No. 9

Written Answers . - Firhouse (Dublin) Post Office .

712.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will confirm that the savings pattern has changed in Firhouse post office, County Dublin, as a result of the office being moved from the shopping centre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

: I propose to take Questions Nos. 711 and 712 together.

In reply to previous Parliamentary Questions about the location of the post office at Firhouse, it was explained that following the resignation of the postmaster at the shopping centre, no one from there applied for the position when the vacancy was advertised despite a canvass of the shopkeepers. The only suitable candidate was appointed in order to maintain counter services in the area although the new post office was not as convenient to some people, including the residents of Tymon Heights as the former had been. Matters raised in a recent letter from the Tymon Heights Residents' Association regarding the post office, including its location, are under examination and will be replied to shortly. So far as the pattern of savings business is concerned, the number of transactions has declined since the transfer of the office to its present location but the indications are that most of the lost business has been transferred to neighbouring post offices particularly the new office at Glenview.
