Vol. 342 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Corporation Lay-Offs.

597.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps he is taking to prevent the threatened lay-off of 372 workers from the environmental works department of Dublin Corporation.

I had discussions recently with the trade unions representing the men involved and also with Dublin Corporation. As a result of these discussions, the corporation agreed to defer for a month the lay-off of 35 men whom they were to let go at the beginning of this month. My Department and Dublin Corporation are now conducting indepth examination of all aspects of the employment situation in the corporation's environment works programme. When that examination has been completed and a report furnished to me I will consider what action might be taken to deal with the matter.
