Vol. 342 No. 4

Written Answers. - Gaming and Lotteries Act Prosecutions.

856.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions taken under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956; and if he has any proposals to amend this Act in view of recent developments in relation to a lottery organised by the board of a semi-State body.

Limerick East): The most recently published crime statistics are in respect of the year 1981 and in that year there were 251 prosecutions under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956.

Various proposals for the amendment of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, have been made to me but these required extensive examination. I would not undertake in reply to a parliamentary question to say what changes, if any, I will propose. Legislation promoted by a member of the Government requires Government approval. When Government approval is given for an announcement about legislation to be made, it is made without delay in the normal course.
