Vol. 342 No. 7

Written Answers. - Local Authorities Reorganisation.

669.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any plans for the reorganisation of local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to the reference which I made to this matter in introducing my Department's Estimate to the House on 12th instant. I mentioned then that the question of improving the structure of the local government system in ways which might make it more effective has been under consideration on and off for several years; also that it is a complex subject with wide ramifications. I indicated that I intended to examine the issues involved and the options as regards changes which would contribute to making the system stronger, more effective and more democratic, and that I was proceeding with a special examination of means to ensure the financial viability of the local government system for the medium and longer terms. It will be the aim to make as much progress as possible with this work in the period ahead.
