asked the Minister for the Environment if he will state in respect of each county the number of ratepayers; the number of rate collectors; the amount of revenue raised by rates; and the cost of collecting rates.

The information requested by the Deputy is shown in the following tabular statement.

The figures in relation to the number of rate collectors have been compiled from returns furnished by local authorities showing the numbers employed as at 31 December 1982 the latest date for which figures are available. They include officers whose duties embrace rate collection work such as revenue collectors and rent rate collectors.

The amounts of rates revenue collected in each county in 1982 and the number of rate demands are also based on returns supplied by local authorities for that year.

The latest available figures for cost of rates collection are as contained in the Local Authorities Estimates of Expenditure for 1982.
