asked the Minister for Justice if he considers the Curragh detention centre to be a suitable place to imprison long stay civilian prisoners; and if he will give a commitment to transfer them to civilian prisons.

Limerick East): The use of military custody for the detention of non-military persons has ended.

Over the past 11 years several Governments have taken the view that, in the prevailing circumstances, military custody for some civilian prisoners was a necessity and the Military Detention Barracks in the Curragh was the only place available where such custody could be provided.
