Vol. 343 No. 1

Written Answers. - Limerick Canal.

688.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works or a company (details supplied) in County Limerick owns or controls the canal which runs from the River Shannon at Plassey to the Abbey River at Canal Harbour in Limerick City; if so, if they will maintain it or hand it over to Limerick Corporation; the plans if any there are for the future of this canal; and the grants that are available for its restoration.

The canal which runs from the River Shannon at Plassey to the Abbey River at Canal Harbour in Limerick city is part of the Shannon Navigation property owned and controlled by the Commissioners of Public Works.

The canal is no longer required for navigation purposes. In 1981, the Commissioners of Public Works granted a licence to Limerick Corporation to develop and use for amenity purposes portion of the south bank of the canal, and they would be prepared to consider any proposal put forward by the corporation for further development of the area for amenity purposes.
