Vol. 343 No. 3

Written Answers. - Advertising by Departments.

579.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will state in relation to the last complete financial year for which figures are available, the amount expended by his Department or by agencies directly controlled or funded by his Department on press advertising in newspapers and magazines published in this country; and the amount expended with each newspaper or periodical concerned.

The total amount spent by my Department on advertising in newspapers and magazines published in this country during 1982 was £132,413. The provision of the detailed information concerning the amount expended with each newspaper and periodical would involve the Department in an inordinate amount of staff time which I would not regard as justifiable in the circumstances. I do not have information regarding the amount of expenditure on such advertising by State agencies under the aegis of my Department.

580.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state in relation to the last complete financial year for which figures are available, the amount expended by his Department or by agencies directly controlled or funded by his Department on press advertising in newspapers and magazines published in this country; and the amount expended with each newspaper or periodical concerned.

The amount spent by my Department on press advertising in 1982 was £63,213.78. The production of the detailed information requested by the Deputy in regard to each newspaper or periodical would involve an inordinate amount of staff time.

As regards bodies under the aegis of my Department, the information sought is not available to me and, in any event, relates to day-to-day administration by the bodies concerned.
