Vol. 343 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Training Courses.

780.

asked the Minister for Justice the number and rank of members of the Garda Síochána, who have been or will be sent on training courses or study visits abroad in 1982 and in 1983; the countries; the particular training colleges or establishments; and the broad purpose of each course or visit.

Limerick East): There is no clear distinction between the concept of a study visit and that of a conference but, taking the question in the sense in which I assume the Deputy intended it, a total of 35 members of the force participated in training courses/study visits abroad during 1982 and it is estimated that a total of 40 will participate in such courses/visits during 1983. While it would not be appropriate to disclose details in relation to individual courses etc., I can say that the purpose of participation in such courses and study visits is to develop the professional competence of the Garda Síochána in areas such as crime investigation, drug trafficking and computerisation; that, in general, members up to and including the rank of chief superintendent are involved; and that the countries concerned are EEC member states and, in one case, the United States of America.
