asked the Minister for Finance (a) the total number of PAYE taxpayers and the number in each of the tax bands, 25 per cent, 35 per cent, 45 per cent, 55 per cent, 60 per cent and 65 per cent; (b) the total expected yield for 1983 from PAYE taxpayers; and (c) the expected yield from each of these categories.

(a) The total number of taxpayers whose main source of income is expected to be within the scope of PAYE in the current income tax year is provisionally estimated at about 790,000. The breakdown of this number by marginal tax rate bands is estimated as follows:

(b) and (c) The yield of income tax in 1983 from the PAYE sector is estimated at £1,472 million. Statistics are not available in relation to the breakdown of this amount by marginal tax rates.
