Vol. 343 No. 9

Vote 1: President's Establishment.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £159,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1983, for the salaries and expenses of the Office of the Secretary to the President, and for certain other expenses of the President's Establishment.

The total provision for the Vote as a whole represents an increase of £31,000 or 24 per cent on the 1982 out-turn. On subhead A — salaries and wages — there is an increase of £10,000 over the 1982 provisional outturn. This is attributable to the cost in 1983 of increases under clause 2 of the Public Service Pay Agreement and the implementation of the third phase of this pay agreement with effect from 1 January last. On subhead B there is an increase. The provision for this year is £27,000 compared to an actual outturn of £5,500 in 1982. The additional provision has been made to cover the estimated cost of two state visits by the President during the course of this year. In relation to post office services there is a small decrease on the subhead.

Vote agreed to.
