Vol. 344 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mackerel Quota.

621.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he is satisfied that the proposed reduction in the mackerel quota will not have serious consequences for the Irish fishing industry.

I regard the mackerel quota proposed by the EEC Commission for Ireland this year as insufficient for the needs of the Irish fishing industry both on the catching and on the processing sides. I have made this clear to the Commission and to the Council of Ministers at recent meetings where I pressed strongly for a considerably increased figure. The original figure proposed has now been revised upwards and I would hope that further more substantial increases can be achieved.
