Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - Rebroadcasting of British TV.

802.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give details of areas in the country in which British television signals are being rebroadcasted by the illegal deflector system; and further if he will give details of the report he has commissioned in his Department on progress being made with regard to negotiations on copyright with the British broadcasting authorities.

So far as my Department are aware, a number of unlicensed rebroadcasting systems operate in Counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Tipperary and Waterford. Such systems are liable to seizure and the operators are liable to prosecution.

The negotiations of copyright agreements with broadcasting authorities is a matter for those who wish to use the broadcast signals. My Department's examination of the matter indicates that any such negotiations would be complex and time consuming.
