Vol. 344 No. 7

Written Answers. - Adult Education Funding.

1021.

asked the Minister for Education if she will give a commitment to provide adequate core funding to Aontas, the National Association of Adult Education, for 1984 and subsequent years; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

1022.

asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately provide £25,000 to enable Aontas, the National Association of Adult Education, to survive until the end of the current financial year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

1023.

asked the Minister for Education if she will agree to provide a grant of £25,000 to enable the National Association of Adult Education (Aontas) to survive to the end of the current financial year; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1021, 1022 and 1023 together.

The grant-in-aid for Aontas in Vote 28 subhead G.1. for 1983 is £52,000.

I would like to point out to the Deputies that the grant-in-aid for this association has been increased over the last few years as follows:

Year

Amount of Grant-in-Aid

1978

£10,000

1979

£10,500

1980

£15,000

1981

£15,000

1982

£50,000

1983

£52,000

It is considered that the increases made in the grant-in-aid for this association have been generous in the context of the present financial difficulties. In this regard it will be noted that in 1982 the grant-in-aid was increased to more than three times the 1981 grant.
