* Preliminary estimate.

The data are taken from a monthly bulletin relating to statistics of registered unemployment which is published by the Statistical Office of the European Communities. A "Technical Note" to the publication indicates that differing national legislation and administrative procedures result in the data being suitable only for the analysis of trends and not for intercountry comparisons of absolute levels of unemployment. Problems of comparability are particularly acute in the case of the unemployment figures for Greece.
