Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Housing Act.

278.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is satisfied with the working of the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982.

I take it that the Deputy is concerned mainly with the parts of the Act related to the fixing of the terms of tenancies of dwellings which were formerly controlled under the Rent Restrictions Acts. I accept the view, expressed on both sides of the House during the passage of the Act, that a rent tribunal system would be the most suitable mechanism for resolving questions of this nature and it is for this reason that I decided to proceed with legislation to set up such a tribunal. A Bill, the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) (Amendment) Bill, 1983, providing for the setting up of such a tribunal has recently been circulated.
