Vol. 345 No. 4

Private Notice Question. - Invasion of Grenada.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if, arising from the United States led invasion of Grenada, and the fact that there are Irish citizens on the island and in view of the loss of life resulting from the fighting which is still going on, the Government will publicly call for a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of the invading forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have followed with very deep concern the development of events in Grenada and very much regret the loss of human life there during the last week. The Government associate themselves fully with the statement issued yesterday by the Secretary General of the United Nations in which he warned of the possibility that the escalation of tensions could further complicate an already complex situation in that region. The Government consider that there is a duty on the part of all concerned to facilitate a speedy resolution of this crisis in accordance with the principles embodied in the Charter of the United Nations, including full respect for the territorial integrity and political independence of that state.

The situation of Irish citizens on the island of Grenada is being followed closely by the Department of Foreign Affairs. Reports to date indicate that they are safe.

Would the Minister indicate if the Government have sought any guarantees from the forces which have invaded the island that the safety of Irish citizens will be protected?

As I have said already, the Department of Foreign Affairs are keeping in close touch with the situation on the island, with particular concern for the safety of Irish citizens. So far, our information is that they are safe. If there is any indication that they are in any danger we will look at what measures can be taken to ensure the safety of those people.

Have the Government at least equal concern for the people of Afghanistan which was invaded by the Soviet Union three years ago, several hundred thousand of whom have been murdered by invading Soviet troops in the meantime?
