Vol. 345 No. 7

Written Answers. - Shannon Estuary Industrial Development Plan.

228.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will draw up an industrial development plan for the Shannon Estuary; and if he will include Tarbert and Ballylongford in this plan.

The IDA 600 acres site at Ballylongford and 130 acre Shannon Development site at Askeaton are being actively promoted for industrial development.

The potential of the Shannon Estuary, including Ballylongford and Tarbert, as a strategic location for industry, particularly heavy industry, is already fully recognised by the industrial development agencies. The establishment of the Aughinish alumina plant which recently commenced production will act as a catalyst for the location of further major industry in the estuary.

A considerable amount of advance planning has already been carried out by various agencies involved in the area in the provision of unsupporting infrastructure and the location of suitable sites.
