Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

282.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone rental problem will be solved for a person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

Arrangements have been made to reduce the rate of rental to residence rate following representations by the person named.

283.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin as he is waiting for over three years.

Service will be provided for the person named as soon as it is possible to do so but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be completed for about six months.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephones. However, by the end of 1984 the vast majority of telephone applications will be met on demand.

284.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 is receiving invoices for local calls which are not owed.

There is nothing to indicate that the subscriber in question is being charged for calls which were not made from his telephone. The accounts were investigated and were found to be correct. The meter and associated equipment were also checked and found to be in good working order.

285.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8.

Service will be provided for the person named as soon as it is possible to do so but it is unlikely that the necessary cabling can be completed for about six months.

It is expected that additional lines will be provided for the persons named within about two months.

289.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for the residents of the new development at The Village, Bettyglen, Raheny, Dublin 5, who have applied for service.

It is expected that telephone service will be provided for applicants in the new development at The Village, Bettyglen early next year.

I am sorry for the delay in providing telephones. However, the vast bulk of applications will be met on demand by the end of 1984.

290.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5.

It is expected that service will be provided for the person named early next year.

291.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason a payphone has not yet been provided in the telephone kiosk at Barnacuillia, County Dublin, despite the fact that in reply to a parliamentary question on 17 May 1983 it was stated that a payphone would be provided during the third quarter of 1983; and when it will be provided.

It is expected that a payphone will be provided in the kiosk at Barnacuillia within the next week or so. The delay in providing the payphone was due to a temporary shortage of engineering stores.

292.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

It is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about a month.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephones. However, by the end of 1984, the vast bulk of applications will be met on demand.

293.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (a) whether an automatic exchange which was built recently in an area (details supplied) in County Galway is fully equipped and (b) when it is proposed to have it fully operational.

The new telephone exchange building in the area named is not yet equipped. It is expected that the new exchange will be brought into service in the second half of next year.

294.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the tremendous difficulty experienced by residents in an area (details supplied) in County Galway in respect of an intermittent telephone service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

During the summer damage was caused by severe lightning storms to telephone cables serving subscribers in the area concerned. The service in the area is now satisfactory.

295.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the difficulties being experienced by a person (details supplied) in Dublin when trying to telephone subscribers in the west and north west; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As stated in my reply to a question on the 26 October telephone service to certain locations in the west of Ireland had been unsatisfactory due to a shortage of trunk circuits. Some additional circuits were provided about two weeks ago and additional circuits will be provided as required to meet traffic needs.

The telephone service to the northwest has been improved with the bringing into service of the new trunk exchange in Sligo during the summer. In coming months additional trunk circuits linking Sligo to Dublin will be provided as required to meet forecast traffic needs. Service is reasonably satisfactory at present.

296.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will make arrangements to have a telephone installed as a matter of urgency for an old age pensioner (details supplied) in County Dublin.

I am very sorry that it will not be possible to provide telephone service for the person named until a new telephone exchange to serve the area is brought into service next year.

297.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones installed in 1979, 1980, 1981, and the estimated number for 1983 and 1984.

The required information is as follows: 1979, 32,000; 1980, 62,000; 1981, 68,000; 1982, 59,000; 1983, (estimated) 55,000; 1984, (forecast) 75,000.

298.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of people waiting for telephone installation in the Dublin 6, 8 and 12 areas.

I regret that records are not maintained in a form that would enable the breakdown requested to be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of staff time.

It may be helpful to the Deputy to know that the Dublin 6 area is served largely by the Rathmines and Terenure exchanges; the Dublin 8 area is served largely by Ship Street exchange and the Dublin 12 area is served largely by Walkinstown exchange. The number of waiting applicants in these exchange areas is as follows: Rathmines, 1,800; Terenure, 800; Ship Street, 3,500; Walkinstown, 2,800.

299.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 8 as he has been waiting for service for five-and-a-half years.

I very much regret the delay in providing telephone service for the person named. However, it will not be possible to meet this application until necessary additional engineering work is carried out.

The objective of the Department's current telephone development programme is to provide a fully satisfactory telephone service nationally in terms of both quality and availability by the end of 1984 and it is expected that service will be provided for the person named about the middle of next year.

300.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the plans being undertaken in County Clare for telephone and post office development; if any further automatic exchanges, postal or sorting offices, post offices etc. are being planned; and when work will start on any such project.

Arrangements are proceeding for the conversion to automatic working, progressively through next year, of the remaining 22 manual telephone exchanges in County Clare. It is planned to replace the existing mobile exchange at Shannon town centre by a new permanent exchange and also to provide a new automatic exchange at Athlunkard — both projects to be completed next year.

A contract was placed recently for the fitting out of the new Shannon town post office and it should be ready for occupation in three to four months.

301.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be restored for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.
