Vol. 346 No. 3

Written Answers. - Population Statistics.

283.

asked the Taoiseach the number of people, aged 60 years of age and over, permanently resident in the State on 1 November, 1983.

The 1981 Census of Population provides the most up-to-date information available in respect of the age structure of the population. On 5 April 1981 the total population was 3,443,405 of whom 508,220 were aged 60 years and over.

The census figures relate to the de facto population, that is to say the population recorded includes visitors present on census night, while usual residents temporarily absent from the State are excluded.
