Vol. 346 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Waterford Magnesite Plant.

323.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if there are any proposals to reopen the Quigley magnesite plant at Ballincourty, Dungarvan, County Waterford or if any alternative suitable industry will be procured for this site.

Quigley Magnesite Ltd. closed in July 1982, as a result of the excess supply worldwide of magnesite and the lack of competitiveness of their Dungarvan plant. I understand that magnesite is still in poor demand on international markets. Nevertheless, the company are continuing to keep the Dungarvan plant on a care and maintenance basis in the hope that the market will significantly improve.

The Industrial Development Authority have approximately 50 acres of land in Dungarvan which is being promoted for new industrial projects.
