asked the Minister for Justice (a) the number recruited to the Garda Síochána since January, 1983; (b) the number of members who left the force in the same period; and (c) the number of members who retired having completed the required number of years, or reached retirement age.

Limerick East): During the period from 1 January 1983 up to and including 25 November 1983 a total of 578 members were recruited to the Garda Síochána.

During the same period, 24 members died in service and 137 members left the force of whom 79 retired voluntarily, having reached 50 years of age and completed the minimum period of service required to qualify for superannuation benefits and 19 retired on reaching the compulsory retirement age.
