Dr. O'Hanlon

asked the Minister for Health the last date on which the National Health Council met; the names of its members; who nominated each member; if he intends to reconstitute the council; the number of members he proposed to have on the new council; who the nominating bodies will be; and the number of medical practitioners he proposes to have on the new council.

The National Health Council last met on 2 March 1978.

I am in the process of reconstituting the council and have sought nominations from the following bodies:

Medical Council, Irish Medical Association, Medical Union, Medical Research Council of Ireland, Post-Graduate Medical and Dental Board, Comhairle na nOspidéal, Voluntary Hospitals, Dental Board, Irish Dental Association, Bord Altranais, Irish Nurses Organisation, Pharmaceutical Society, Irish Pharmaceutical Union, Bord na Radharcmhastóirí, Association of Opticians, Health Education Bureau, Irish Congress of Trade Unions, Consumers Association of Ireland, Medico-Social Research Board, National Association of the Mentally Handicapped.

The total number of members of the new council will be finalised in the near future but I anticipate that the number will be in the region of 33.

The number of medical practitioners on the new council will depend on the nominations of the bodies consulted but I estimate that the number will be around 12.
