asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism (a) the cost to the Exchequer of the consumer subsidy on bread; (b) the contribution from the EEC towards this subsidy; and (c) the value of the subsidy to the consumer.

(a) A provision of £41 million has been made in the Estimates for 1984 in respect of the consumer subsidy on standard bread; (b) no EEC contribution is made in this regard; and (c) the current level of subsidy is 15½p per 800g loaf and pro rata for other sizes.
