Vol. 348 No. 12

Written Answers. - Midleton (Cork) Sewerage Scheme.

387.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a statement regarding the hold up of the work on the Midleton sewerage scheme; and if he will confirm that the Government will provide a treatment plant.

Contract documents for the Midleton sewerage scheme were approved by my Department on 17 November 1982. The scheme as approved provided for disposal of domestic and industrial effluent, following comminution, at Rathcoursey Point and was subject to the conditions that:—

(1) the quality of the receiving water at Rathcoursey Point would be monitored by an independent body — An Foras Forbartha, and,

(2) in the event that monitoring showed secondary treatment to be justified the provision of such treatment would be planned and financed as a priority item at local and national level.

The invitation of tenders for the scheme is a matter for the local authority. I understand that Cork County Council must await the granting of a foreshore licence for which application has been made by them to the Department of Communications before they will be in a position to advertise for tenders for the construction of the scheme.
