Vol. 349 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tax Refunds.

473.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason a refund of tax has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; if the maximum tax-free allowance for a wife and seven children is not being given to this person; the total refund which will be paid to this person; the date on which it will be paid; the maximum tax-free allowance that will be given to this person; the date on which it will be allowed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that the taxpayer completed a return of income for the curent year, 1983-84, on 3 January 1984. On the basis of that return he was granted a revised tax-free allowance of £4,906 (i.e. £94.35 per week). This figure includes the married person's allowance and an allowance in respect of seven children. An amended certificate of tax-free allowances was issued in the case on 25 January 1984 and, when it was operated by the employer four days later, a refund of £9.13 was made to the taxpayer. This represents the amount of tax which had been overpaid by him since 6 April 1983.

An examination of the taxpayer's position for the year 1982-83 has disclosed that insufficient tax has been paid by him for that year. This matter will be the subject of a communication from the inspector to the taxpayer in the near future.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax rebate will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that a final cheque representing the balance of tax deducted from the taxpayer's earnings in the current year, 1983-84, was issued to him on 15 March 1984.
