Vol. 350 No. 5

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payments.

537.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make the necessary amendments to the Finance Act, 1980 so as to raise the present tax-free ceiling of £6,000 on non-statutory redundancy compensation and the present top slicing relief figure of £10,000 in order to restore their original 1980 value; and if he will make provisions for the regular indexation of these figures in line with the consumer price index.

I do not propose to make any amendment at this stage to the tax provisions relating to these payments. Increasing the ceilings in line with movements in the consumer price index since 1980 would cost the Exchequer approximately £7 million in a full year. It would be inappropriate to consider modifications such as those suggested by the Deputy in isolation from a more general review of income taxation.
