Vol. 351 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Search Warrant.

615.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason the gardí removed a video machine from the home of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12; if they were entitled to do this on the basis of their warrant; if they were entitled to strip search the person in her own home which they did; if he is aware that some furniture was damaged during the search of the house; if he will arrange for this matter to be investigated to ensure that the law has not been exceeded; and when the video will be returned.

Limerick East): I am informed by the Garda authorities that the search of the house in question was carried out on foot of a properly authorised search warrant which also gave a right of search of persons. I am informed that two banghardaí were involved in the search of the women referred to but that they did not have occasion to have any physical contact with her. I am further informed that no damage was caused to any property during the search.

The video machine was removed for the purpose of further Garda inquiries which will be conducted as speedily as possible.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that the members concerned acted properly and within the law on the occasion.
