Vol. 351 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Grants.

617.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of grant approved towards the repair and extension to a national school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny; and when it is expected that the grant will be paid.

As stated in reply to the Deputy's question on 30 November 1983, it is proposed to provide a new national school at Lisdowney, Ballyragget, County Kilkenny. Following recent agreement with the school authorities on the amount of the local contribution, my Department will shortly be issuing the usual formal grant sanction. It is not the practice to disclose the amount of grants sanctioned in individual cases, such information being regarded as confidential between the school authorities and my Department. It is not possible at this stage to say when the grant may be paid.

A grant was recently sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of improvements to the school in question. Payment of the grant is a matter for the Commissioners of Public Works. It is not the practice to disclose the amount of grants sanctioned in individual cases, such information being regarded as confidential between the school authorities and my Department. The question of an extension to the school does not arise.

asked the Minister for Education if she will arrange to have all outstanding grants paid to the board of management for works carried out to a school (details supplied) in County Kilkenny.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that the balance of a grant sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of installing a heating system in the school referred to by the Deputy was withheld by the commissioners pending the completion of certain outstanding works, and will be paid when the project is completed to the commissioners' satisfaction.

The school authorities have also applied for a grant for improvements carried out to the playspace of the school. A further report on the work is currently awaited by my Department from the commissioners, and will establish whether a grant is payable. A decision in the matter will be conveyed to the school authorities as soon as possible.
