Vol. 351 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Accident Deaths.

12.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of deaths as a result of traffic accidents in each of the past five years; if he will give an age breakdown showing those under 20 years, 25 years, 35 years, and over 35 years; if records are kept of fatal accidents on a weekday basis; and if so, if he will also give this information.

Details of the number of deaths and injuries resulting from road accidents are published annually by An Foras Forbartha in the report entitled "Road Accident Facts". The latest of these reports, "Road Accident Facts 1982" shows that the number of persons killed in road accidents in each of the years 1979-82 inclusive was as follows: 1979, 614; 1980, 564; 1981, 572; and 1982, 533. Provisional figures compiled by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána indicate that 523 persons were killed on the roads in 1983.

As regards the more detailed information requested, I would refer the Deputy to the Foras reports, copies of which are available in the Dáil Library. These reports provide analyses of road traffic accidents under a variety of headings in respect of each year. Details of casualties classified by age group and day of the week will be found in Tables 14 and 8, respectively.
