Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Entrants.

708.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of males and females who applied for admission to the Garda Síochána in 1983; the total number of males and females who passed the exam and were called for interview; the number who passed the exam and were called for medical examination; the number who have since been called for training; when the remainder who passed the exam and medical will be called for training, if he will also give the same statistics on applicants for both bandsmen and radio technicians to the Garda Síochána in 1983; and if he will make a statement on the entire recruitment position in the Garda Síochána at present.

, Limerick East): Records are kept in a form which relates to competitions rather than to calendar years. Subject to that qualification the information sought by the Deputy is set out in the following tabular statements.

As indicated in the national plan, recruitment to the Garda Síochána is to continue with a view to maintaining a strength of 11,400 during the period 1985-87. The precise numbers to be recruited will depend on the level of vacancies arising from resignations, retirements, and deaths during this period. While it is difficult to be precise about the numbers involved, it is estimated that the figure for 1985 will be of the order of 320. No decision has been made at this stage as to the total number to be appointed from the 1983 competition or the length of time the lists of qualified candidates will last.
