Vol. 352 No. 8

Written Answers. - Mayo School Repairs.

731.

asked the Minister for Education when urgently required repairs will be carried out to Creevagh national school, Carrowmore, Lacken, Ballina, County Mayo.

The Commissioners of Public Works have reported that it would not be feasible to bring this school up to modern standard at economic cost and recommend the replacement of the building or a major reconstruction scheme which would effectively amount to the provision of a new school.

As Creevagh is a small two-teacher school with a projected declining enrolment, it would not be in accordance with general educational policy to provide a replacement school. Accordingly, the question of making more suitable alternative arrangements for the education of the Creevagh pupils is being further considered by my Department. In this regard proposals for amalgamation of Creevagh with Carrowmore school in the same parish have recently been put to the boards of management for their consideration in consultation with the parents and teachers. When the views of the interests concerned have been made known to my Department, a decision in the case will be taken as quickly as possible.
