asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs in respect of any Minister of State in his Department, the total cost to his Department of providing transport under the new scheme for such Ministers since the scheme came into operation in October 1983; the total mileage involved; and the total cost arising from the employment of a civilian driver.

The total cost of providing transport for the Minister of State in my Department since the present arrangement began is £30,643. The mileage which the Minister of State has undertaken is 35,228 miles, at a cost of £11,258. The cost of employing civilian drivers in that period has been £19,385 in all.
