Vol. 353 No. 7

Written Answers. - Free Education Scheme.

596.

asked the Minister for Education the attitude of her Department to post primary schools in the free education scheme which attempt to select their intake of pupils on the basis of ability through the use of entrance examinations, aptitude tests, primary school reports or by other means.

The eligibility of pupils in general for entry to secondary school is governed by regulations, but my Department does not have statutory power of control over the admission of individual pupils to a particular secondary school. My Department would however deprecate selection on the basis of academic ability.
