Vol. 353 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dredging of Northern Blackwater.

673.

asked the Minister for Finance when dredging will commence on the Blackwater River; the number of local persons they expect to employ; and if part of the work, i.e. replacing bridges, culverts etc., will be let out on contract.

The Blackwater Catchment Drainage Scheme is being undertaken jointly by the Department of Agriculture, Northern Ireland and the Commissioners of Public Works. Works on the outfall channels of the scheme, which are being carried out by the Northern Ireland Authorities, commenced in May 1984. When these works have reached a stage where an adequate outfall is available, the way should be clear for the Commissioners to commence their operation on the Monaghan reaches of the catchment. It is expected that that stage will be reached by summer 1985. At peak level of the works, the Commissioners will employ about 120 men.

Works to the Border bridges and culverts will, by agreement between the Northern Ireland Authorities and the Commissioners, be carried out by way of contract. No decision has yet been taken as to the method of executing similar items of work in the Monaghan reaches.
