Vol. 353 No. 9

Written Answers. - Milk Cessation Premium Scheme.

791.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the present position in regard to proposals that the Government should pay an annual cessation premium of 15p per gallon over five years to farmers who wish to leave dairying so that the milk involved can be allocated to special cases including farmers who have suffered as a result of disease; and the present position in relation to the question of a milk reserve generally.

The milk cessation premium scheme which I announced on 9 November provides for a payment of a premium of 70p per gallon payable in instalments over five years to producers who undertake to discontinue milk production for as long as the super-levy system operates. The scheme has been introduced in order that a national reserve can be set up from the quotas released to cater for disease and certain other special category cases.
